SOFT  HURT

Soft Hurt is a Tailored Jacket project that explores the wearers' relationship with the garment by exploring opposing themes on the outside vs. inside of the Jacket. The outside is a soft pastel even plaid painstakingly matched, with heart-shaped pockets, an exaggerated hip pad, and a rounded hem creating an overall soft and kawaii aesthetic. The inside features hand-painted sublimation print lining, each panel featuring portraits and text focused on themes of depression and declining mental health, that only the wearer would have an intimate connection or view with. The text is inspired by Devi McCallion and Features two portraits of her.

MANTIS

For my sophomore project, I was inspired by the mantis shrimp, a crustacean that process ultraviolet light and therefore sees three times as many colors as humans do.  I used Peyote stitch to create a panel of beads that works as a carapace that connects the garment at the sleeves, neckline, and waistline. The contrast between the hard shell of beads and the lightweight cotton voile accentuates the movement of the wearer, combining a playful softness with shifting volume. The surface and edges are treated with iridescent and holographic strips, from leftover easter basket waste, acting like bioluminescent fins, refracting and reflecting light as the body moves. The holographic material reflects and represents colors unseen to the human eye that mantis shrimp can see and also comments on plastic waste in our ocean.
